Tobias A. Ryan is a writer and psychologist in Oregon and Washington State.
When he was 11 years old, he began his life as a writer with his first poem composed for a star in the constellation Orion. A Prentiss Cheney Hoyt Poetry Contest winner at 18, Dr. Ryan continued to write through college, completing original songs and stories.
In his education, he sought ways to value cultural influences in science and the arts, lived abroad, and studied languages, customs, and beliefs from around the world. He finished his dissertation alongside his first book of sonnets, publishing the two together for his graduation with a doctoral degree in clinical psychology.
Since 2002, he has written and recorded original music, helping to form the Portland band Outside Voices in 2010. From 2008 to 2012, Tobias Ryan was a musical director and company member with Portland Actors Ensemble, composing and writing original music for productions of Shakespeare’s plays, including The Tragedy of Julius Ceasar and Much Ado About Nothing.
In 2011, Outside Voices recorded Songs from Shakespeare for Portland Actors Ensemble performances. In 2013, he worked with a newly formed theatre company, Salt and Sage Productions, as musical director for productions of How I Learned to Drive and Cressida. Beginning in 2014, Dr. Ryan co-wrote a book chapter and research articles on personality assessment.
In 2024, he was a featured poet for National Poetry Month with Vancouver’s Birdhouse Books. Asked over the years to define his writing, he has always preferred the simple moniker of Poet.
