About

Dr. Tobias A. Ryan, PsyD, is a writer and psychologist in Oregon and Washington State.
A Prentiss Cheney Hoyt Poetry Contest winner at 18, Tobias Ryan continued to write through college, completing original songs and stories.
In his training, he sought ways to value cultural influences in science and the arts, living abroad and studying customs and beliefs from around the world. He finished his dissertation alongside his first book of sonnets, publishing the two together for his doctoral degree in clinical psychology.
Asked over the years to define his writing, he has always preferred the simple moniker of Poet.
With over twenty years of experience
Dr. Ryan works to serve his community through clinical practice, teaching, and research. Dr. Ryan’s therapy approach focuses on the whole experience of health and practical methods for sustainable change through therapy for children, adolescents, adults, and families.
As an adjunct professor at the University of Portland, Dr. Ryan’s psychology classes routinely integrated cultural responsiveness to the history and theories of psychology.
In 2023, he was honored with a student citation for positive impact on a first-year student. Dr. Ryan specializes in problems that disrupt development and impair relationships, from personality functioning and mood disturbance to trauma and family violence. Since 2013 he has conducted hundreds of evaluations in more than seven counties in Oregon and Washington State.
